Mukutan conservancy

The Mukutan Conservancy, founded by author and environmental activist Kuki Gallmann, has been embroiled in a regional conflict for about a decade, stemming from tensions between local pastoralists and private conservancies. This situation has been exacerbated by the worst drought in 40 years, driving herders to illegally invade protected areas in search of grazing land. Despite repeated government attempts to stabilize the region, violence has escalated, with armed groups attacking conservancies, killing wildlife, and vandalizing facilities.

Gallmann’s conservancy has been repeatedly targeted, and she was seriously injured in shootings in 2017 and 2021. Following these incidents, her daughter Sveva and her partner Nigel took on the mission of protecting the area, expanding projects to promote coexistence between people and wildlife. The current project documents the activities undertaken by the Mukutan Conservancy to advance sustainable conservation and community empowerment.
